Rankings going into the final race of the year
With the Final race of the ranking season upon us this weekend in Lowtown Kildare here are the rankings going into it. Some divisions are sewn up while others still have all to race for. Full details of the race can be found HERE
A reminder on how the points system works. Competitors in all divisions of the Ribadesella ranking series are awarded points which count towards end of season divisional rankings as follows – 1st = 15 points; 2nd = 13 points; 3rd = 12 points; 4th = 11 points; 5th = 10 points; 6th = 9 points; 7th = 8 points; 8th = 7 points; 9th = 6 points; 10th = 5 points; 11th = 4 points; 12th = 3 points; 13th = 2 points; 14th = 1 point; with all other finishers from 15th down being awarded 1 point. Lets look at the standings with 2 ranking races by division.
Div 1 Open:
Ben Higgins currently leads the way with 71 points from his best 5 races after racking up yet another win on the Lower Liffey. Peter Egan is currently in 2nd place with 54 points. While not having 5 races to count yet, 2 more athletes could make the 5 races for the end of the season. Sean Smyth currently sits on 52 points & Senan Forristal on 50pts after 4 races. Higgins has the division title wrapped up the runner up spot is up for grabs and also some podium bragging rights for the final race of the season.
Div 1 Women:
Caoilin Caffrey already has the end of year title sewn up with 5 wins from 5 races, maxing out the points and impossible to overhaul at this stage of the season No other paddler can reach the required minimum of 5 races for an end of year ranking.
Div 2:
Malcom Banks extended his lead after winning the Lower Liffey with 68 points form 5 races & now has enough of a margin that he has the end of year title sewn up. Paul Russel is currently in 2nd with 61pts . 3 more paddlers (Kevin Cahill, Deaglán Ó’Drisceoil & David Francis) sit on 4 races and need to complete the final race for a ranking .
Div 3:
Matt Robinson leads the way on 64 pts form with Bill Milne 2nd on 48pts. 4 races followed by Isaac Belov-McDowell on 49 from 4 races, making it possibly to tie on points. It would then go to who has the most race wins. Robinson leads this 3 to 2 right now. If Robinson finishes 5th or higher he can not be caught.
Div 4:
In one of the closest divisions, Noel O’Connel has taken over the lead on 70 pts after the last race with Simon Hearns in 2nd on 66 pts from his best 5 races. It will be ahead to head between these 2 for the divisional title. Chasing down the lead 2 is Eoin Roche on 55 & Sean Heneghan on 40 pts. A further 4 paddlers can reach the required 5 races for an end of year ranking with it being possible for both Nicholas Finn to take the runner up spot with a win & Fiachra McDonagh can max out on 62pts with a win. Charlie Doherty of Belfast CC & TJ Brennan of Thomastown both also sit on 4 races. Watch this space for what promises to be a ding dong battle to the end.
Div 5 Open:
This division has turned into a 2-horse race going into the final race of the year. Naoise Heneghan extended his lead to 71pts from his best 5 after his 2nd place finish in the Lower Liffey. Patrick Melia has taken up the chase and sits on 69 pts. A win for Melia would tie it up on 71pts a piece. Oisin Caffrey has left too much work to do & sits on 64 pts but could only increase that to 67pts with a win. Ethan Noud is best of the rest (51 pts) with Conor McCoy (45 pts) , David Comerford (35pts), Darren Foster (36 pts) & Lukas Dziwirek (34 pts) have also completed the required 5 races for a ranking. Division 5 has seen some great racing with the highest number of participants to date, with 35 paddlers having raced year to date.
Div 5 Women:
Mille Brennan leads the way with 73 pts out of a possible 75. A win this weekend secures the Divisional title. 2 more paddlers can reach the required 5 races by end of year with Breda Keating being the one who poses a threat to Brennan. Keating sits on 58 pts after 4 races & with a win could get to 73pts to match Brennan. Carol O’Donaghue is currently on 46 pts after 4 races.
Div 7 Men:
Currently no one has the 5 required races to take the title but Luke Foster is the only one who can, sitting on 55pts after 4 races.
Div 7 Women:
No paddler can reach the required minimum of 5 races for an end of year ranking.
Div 7 Boys U15:
Danny Cooper may have managed to sew up the Divisional title before being promoted with 73 points from a possible 75. Finn Noud is the only other paddler who can reach the 5 required races for an end of year ranking but can not catch Cooper, currently sitting on 47pts after 4 races
Div 7 Girls U15:
Meghan O’Donaghue is the only paddler who can possibly reach the minimum 5 races required by end of season. Meghan currently sits on 58 pts from 4 races.
K2 Long Course:
No crew can reach the required minimum of 5 races for an end of year ranking.
K2 Short Course:
The Father & Daughter crew of Brian & Alia Harris have the end of year title sewn up with 69 points from 5 races. No other crew can reach the minimum 5 races required.
GP Men:
Fergus Cooper secures the Divisional Title after the lower Liffey and sits on 73 pts from a possible 75. No other paddler has more than 2 races
GP Women:
Katie King secures the Divisional title with another win on the Lower Liffey, maxing out at 75pts. No other paddler can reach the 5 required races
Canoe:
No paddler can reach the required minimum of 5 races for an end of year ranking.
