** Updated 20/7/21**
We are delighted to announce Canoe Marathon Irelands inaugural Short Course National Championships. Over the last 5 years or so, short course marathon races have become an established part of the International racing event schedule with Ireland bringing home multiple medals at World Cup events.
Short course racing involves racing laps over a short course of around 1.2km per lap with portages between each lap, totaling approx 3.5km with 2 portages. It is fast and exciting to watch.
For our 1st Short Course nationals we are delighted to be able to run it at The Avon at Blessington Lakes in Co Wicklow. This spectacular lakeshore venue is perfect for racing with a beach style portage. It also has an outdoor food village & activity centre so there is plenty to do once you are done with racing. Check out https://www.theavon.ie/ for more details and to book activities.
As it is a National Championship event there will be age grouped races. An athletes age on January 1st 2021 defines what category they belong in. We will also have an Open B Division for non race craft (i.e. no racing K1’s, surf skis or WWR boats), so there should be race to suit everyone
There will be a 2 Euro entry fee per car into the facility. Race entry fees are 5 Euro for Juniors & 10 Euro for Seniors. Register below
Due to COVID restrictions only race participants will be permitted onto the beach but the event can be viewed from the grass area overlooking the lake. Once a race is over paddlers will be asked to clear the beach area with all their equipment as quickly as possible.
The races will run over a 3 hour window as per the schedule below. Registration for paddlers to collect their race numbers will close 30 mins before their designated race start time. The race schedule is below
Course Maps and further details will be published in the days before the race
