Standards for international racing 2022

The minimum standard 5k time to be eligible for selection remain the same as last year

Senior / U23 Men.            23:00

Senior/U23 Women         26:00

Junior Men                         24:00

Junior Women                   28:30

These are minimum standards only and do not guarantee selection for European or World Championships. They are also intended as a guide for aspiring international paddlers in the future.

All applicants must be eligible to compete for Ireland under ICF regulations.

World Cup in Prague, Czech Rep. May 28-29  Senior and Junior.

  • Any paddler achieving the minimum standard may race at the World Cup in Prague.
  • Paddlers must compete at at least one domestic marathon  event before the World Cup.

European Championships : Silkeborg , Denmark July 28-31 Short Course senior only.  Long Course Senior, U23 and Junior.

  • Best result at World Cup in long and short course will qualify for European Championships  provided they are in the top 50%. The second boat and any  other available places will selected based on results at Malahide Ranking Race May 14th. (available short course entries  will be offered based on results at Malahide.)
  • All paddlers must have achieved the minimum standard times.
  • Paddlers must compete at a minimum of two domestic races before the European Championships , otherwise they forfeit their place which will be offered to the next best placed paddler in the selection race who has met all criteria.
  • For classes with two or less eligible paddlers a selection race will not be required.

World Championships : Ponte De Lima, Portugal Sep29-Oct 2

  • The best result in European Championships will qualify for World Championships provided they are in the top 50%. ( short and long course)
  • Selection for the second boat  on long course and other available places  will be based on results at the National Marathon Championships in Dripsey, Cork  August 20th.
    • The Junior selection races will be the U18 races at the National Marathon Championships
    • The U23 selection races will be the Senior races at the National Marathon Championships

                Selection for available short course entries will be at Short Course Nationals , Blessington July 16th.

  • Paddlers must compete at a minimum of three domestic marathon events before the World Championships , otherwise they forfeit their place which will be offered to the next best placed paddler in the selection race who has met all criteria.
  • For classes with two or less eligible paddlers a selection race will not be required.
  • All paddlers must have achieved the minimum standard times

The committee will nominate/arrange a K2 selection race should it be required for either Championship.  In the event of an athlete withdrawal the place will be offered to the next highest placed athlete in the relevant selection race. In the case where no other athlete who raced for selection is available the committee may nominate any qualified paddler, using most recent performances as a guide. The committee may nominate any qualified paddlers who are travelling to an event as reserve team member. Should an U23 athlete qualify for both U23 and senior selection they must choose one class to compete in. The available space will be offered to the next placed athlete at the selection race who has met all criteria. Should there be no other eligible athletes they may compete in both events.

Selection to the National Team is subject to Canoeing Ireland approval. Athletes can be de-selected for doping infringements and any other misconduct that could Canoeing Ireland into disrepute.
